So apart from being a giant Earth nerd, i am also am in many fandoms. so i think from time to be i'll be writing about the geology of my favorite fantasy worlds. So just bear with my fandoming.
The Star Wars is the one of the biggest Sci-fi series to be made in the history of time. There are so many planets to choose from so, i think im going to write about some of my favorites.
Tatooine
Tatoonine is a large planet, which is only 1% water. so basically it is a desert planet. The main filming location was is Tunisia (Northern Africa). Luke Skywalker's home seen in Episode 4 was filmed at the "Sidi Driss" Hotel. These houses were carved from Sandstone because it is very easy to cut.
In deserts like Tatooine, wind causes a ripple effect on the sand, like the bottom of the sea (except that was made from waves). Part of Tatooine was filmed at Dath Valley, California. Death Valley, being the lowest point on land has a salt pan which was believed to have once been an inland sea, much like Salt Lake city once was.
The Sarlacc was the pit in the sand which basically ate everything dropped into its jaws. It's mouth resembles a sink hole. Sinkholes are most of the time caused by limestone cavities collapsing leaving a giant hole in the ground which kind of looks like the entrance to the underworld.

Mustafar
This HIGHLY volcanic planet is where one of the biggest fight scenes took place. When filming, the crew went to Sicilly to film in front of Mount Etna, and acive stratovolcano which erupts almost every year. During a eruption, they filmed to volcano, then later added Anakin and Obiwan into the scene. Strato (or composite) volcanoes are composed of layers of rock, lava and ash. These eruptions are the deadliest, for they erupt violently and release Pyroclastic flows. This is very uninhabitable planet. Because it is has many volcanoes, ash clouds must be covering up the entire sun. One occasion this has happened was the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo. This created a humungo ash cloud which left blocked out the sun and made it look like a snowy night.

Hoth
Hoth is an isolated planet with no human life and was a sea which froze over. Many places are covered in ice through most of the year. Like: the poles, Scandanavia, parts of Russia, and my beloved, Iceland. The footage for Hoth was taken in Finse, Norway. Norway is part of Scandanavia, which is surrounded by the Barent sea, North sea, Norweigen sea, and the body of water called Skagerak between Scandanavia and Denmark. Svalbard, the frozen archipelago, was colonized by Norway.
In Hoth, when the sun is up some of the snow and ice melt a bit, but over night, the ice freezes again, expanding and makes cracks in the deep ice. These are called cravesses.

And that concludes out journey of the geology of the Star Wars universe.
Let me know what fictional world you would want to know about.
See ya soon,
Brie :P
