Okay, so i never do book reviews or anything, but i had to write about this book. Ready Player One is the single most amazing book i have read in my life.
Ill just debrief for anyone who doesnt know about this book. Ready Player One is set in a Dystopian future, where instead of people facing everyday life, everyone is almost always immersed in a virtual reality system called the OASIS. When the creator of this game, James Halliday dies, he leaves a message for everyone on the system, informing them of a hidden easter egg in the OASIS, and whomever finds the egg will be awarded with Halliday's enourmous fortune.
The story we follow as readers is in the perspective of Wade Watts, or Parzival as known on OASIS, who is a poor 18 year old kid who devotes as much or his free time looking for Halliday's egg.
I have never read anything so unique in everyway possible. It was equally parts adventurous, fun, and awesome. The storyline contained part of every geeky game, film, or song ever written, but was so completely its own adventure. We have all thought of a virtual reality being invented at some point in our lives, but to picture it as such a high stakes game was so unbelievably captivating.
Wade Watts, our protagonist is such an ordinary character at the beginning that many of us can relate to him and his ways. Starting as just another player, Wade is one in billions of egg hunters. But thanks to his dedication to his quest, he is able to put his extensive knowledge of 80's pop cuture to work and begin to solve the puzzle.
You may be wondering, if many of the young people of this day and age, such of myself, would find this book at all interesting due to the large amount of culture dated before the current generation. I had this worry starting off, but i was surprised to recognize how many of the songs and films i knew, such as Indiana Jones, Monty Python, Pink Floyd, etc. Of course, there were some references i didnt
understand very well, these mainly being the videogames. But never fear, for Ernest is here. Cline describes every single detail of these films and games so well, it is as if i had always known them.
At the end of this book, i had become so attached with the story and characters that i started tearing up because it was over. Though from the synopsis of Ready Player One, you would expect it to appeal more to boys because of the heavy videogame theme. But i strongly think that anyone, girl or boy would love this book, mainly depending on your thirst for adventure.
Oh, and not to mention that they WILL be making this book into a films. The role of director was offered to so many extremely amazing people including Christopher Nolan, and Peter Jackson. But in the end we now have none other than the amazing Stephen Spielburg for the director. (Yes!)
Anyways. That was my first book review i guess. I just needed to get that out of my system. Yeah... Im on book hangover right now.
I know i havent been updating very recently, but there is alot of geology content to come. Ive just come back from my trip to Yosemite, Mono Lake, and Mammoth, so im currently writing up some stuff about that. More to come soon.
